Bianca
While working in my studio, I heard chainsaws across the street. I walked over and found out it was a Northern Catalpa tree being cut down. I related to the man in charge that I was a studio furniture maker and asked if I could have some of the wood. After seeing what I was working on he offered to mill the tree with his Wood-Mizer. At the end of the day the tree surgeon, and his son Hunter and I milled the tree. They did this all free of charge and two years later the wood is ready to use.
I designed Bianca with legs that could be made on the lathe using a split turning technique. I also wanted to keep the nice light color of the sanded Catalpa so I experimented with wood bleach to offset the darkening effect of the finish. The finished table with its glass top represents my interpretation of minimalism.
